The trade requires spending a lot of time in front of a computer, constantly replaying the same image, listening to the same audio, and cutting clips one after another.

The repetitive sequencing process alone could drive the average person crazy but admit it… We love the craft and stick it out even when the going gets tough. That doesn’t change the fact that editing video is very boring at times!

You can use techniques and strategies to make your experience with visual editing more efficient, motivating, and fun. The following tips will help you speed up your workflow, build skills at a good pace. And have enough time for other activities in life while creating captivating videos.

Is video editing boring?

Yes, video editing can be boring. Video editing is a time-consuming process where you have to repeatedly watch the same scene to find a specific moment within a video. If you have a short attention span, video editing will definitely bore you.

Here are seven tips to help make your Boring Video Editing workflow more interesting:

1. Use different media types to keep things fresh – photos, music, text, etc.

One way to help make editing a video more interesting is to vary the types of media that you use. If you have a short attention span, switching things up and being more creative is a good idea.

For example, you can use photos, music, text animations or transitions, audio clips, and voiceovers to make your videos more engaging. The more variety there is in your video, the less likely you will get bored of editing it. Trying out new techniques will also help to boost your skills and will probably teach you something that you can use in future videos.

When you’re editing with new techniques, you’ll be more engaged and motivated to keep learning. I often try to find new ways to merge and edit clips and music to create a video that I’m satisfied with.

2. Change up workstation setup

Simply changing your workstation can help you get your motivation back while editing. You can either make minor changes or a complete renovation of your work area. Moving your desks into a new space, changing your lightings, or getting a better chair are all examples of minor changes you can make to your workstation.

An example of a significant upgrade to your video editing workstation would be adding a 4k monitor or upgrading your computer. If you have the ability to make changes to your workstation, do it. A new environment can be very motivating and inspiring, and trust me; it will help.

I use cuts and fade-to-black transitions with a creative twist on most of my projects, and I never use the same transition twice in one video. One of the things I like to do is mix and match effects on transitions. For example, I combine the “color plane transition effect” with a directional blur.

I was fortunate enough to have a great friend in the industry that taught me everything I know about video editing. We were able to collab on a project together using Google Hangouts, and it was great. We could see each other’s screens and take control of their computers when needed. It allowed us to brainstorm in real-time and made our collaboration much more productive and fun!!

Without ever having to leave your seat, you can have a collaboration session with friends or other people worldwide. In my opinion, this is the best way to make video editing more interesting while sharing ideas and techniques.
